Pisz (German: Johannisburg, formerly Jańsbork or Jansbork) a town in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, the seat of Pisz County and of the urban-rural gmina (commune) Pisz, the largest gmina in Poland (area 634.8 km², including about two-thirds of Poland's biggest lake, Śniardwy). It is located in the southeastern part of the Polish Masurian Lakeland, by the lake Roś, on the banks of the Pisa river, surrounded by Puszcza Piska, one of the largest forests in Poland. Pisz has 19,332 inhabitants (data from 2006). The town was badly damaged during World War II (about 70% of the buildings were destroyed).
